What is this test

A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a specialized imaging test that uses advanced X-ray technology and an intravenous contrast dye to create detailed 3D images of the coronary arteries.

When is it needed

• This test is often recommended as a first-line diagnostic tool for patients with a low-to-moderate risk of heart disease. It is used to:

• Rule out Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Quickly determine if chest pain or other symptoms are caused by blocked arteries.

• Detect Early Plaque: Identify "soft" plaque that might not show up on other tests but could pose a future risk of a heart attack.

• Evaluate Anomalies: Check for structural abnormalities in the heart’s anatomy

• Screen High-Risk Patients: Assess individuals with a strong family history of heart disease who are experiencing atypical symptoms.

How is it done

• The procedure is fast and typically takes about 20-25 minutes:

• A small IV line is placed in your arm to deliver the contrast dye, which helps the arteries show up clearly on the scan.

• You will lie on a motorized table that slides into the doughnut-shaped CT scanner. You will be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds while the images are captured.

• After the scan, you may be monitored for a short period to ensure you have no reaction to the contrast dye before going home.

Any preparation required

• To ensure the clearest possible images, a few simple steps are necessary:

• You should avoid eating anything for at least four hours before the test, though clear liquids are usually fine.

• Avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate for 12–24 hours prior, as caffeine can increase your heart rate and interfere with the scan.

• Drink plenty of water before and after the test to help your kidneys flush the contrast dye out of your system.

• Inform your doctor if you have any allergies, kidney issues, or if there is any chance you might be pregnant.
